If I planted an organic garden but used Miracle-Gro on it, is it still considered organic?
Have I ruined the green by using the blue?
Granny, I think you are right on the mark.....
The term "organic gardening" can be taken in many ways. To get organic certification from the USDA for farmers is whole different ball game from the back yard garden. According to their basic standards, using any synthesized material when an organic replacement is available would nix your certification. Unless of course the material was on the "exceptions" list.
Check out this PDF from the USDA, it's the original "prohibited" list from 1990, it's been amended hundreds of times since then, but even in the beginning, many synthesized chemicals were "exceptions" in an organic farm.

It's pretty amazing to find some of the chemicals that may have been used on your "organic" food.
So, since you used Miracle Gro, a synthesized chemical fertilizer that has an organic substitute, your garden could no longer be certified organic. But are you really after the approval of the USDA? Probably not. By the sound of your concern, you probably didn't use any environmentally harmful or unsafe pesticides or herbicides in your garden. You did use a safe, effective, man made fertilizer though. Did you "ruin the green" by doing this? I think not. So by "official standards" - not an organic garden - but by your standards is what really matters - good, safe, home grown food that you had total control over.
Here's something else to think about - and for those who are also growing an "organic garden" - Did you grow from seed? Was the seed bought from a certified organic supplier? - Inoculated bean seeds? May not be organic anymore. - Did you buy starter plants for your garden? - From a cert. organic grower? - What used to be grown on you garden plot? Before you owned the land. Were synthetic fertilizers or fungicides or weed killers or..... EVER used? - the questions go on and on. The wrong answer to any of these questions could result in an "official" non-organic garden.
Organic is what you make of it. You're already way ahead if you just do your best to grow safe, nutritious, quality food for your family.
Happy growing!
