I would like to hear opinions from someone who has tasted canned San Marzano tomatoes (Certified "DOP").?
For those who don't know, the San Marzano tomato is alleged to be the best tomato in the world for making tomato sauce dishes such as spaghetti, pizza, etc. It is grown in Campania region of southern Italy and only tomatoes grown in that region and that meet certain standards can be labeled with the European Union's "DOP" certification. There are many imitations where seeds have been transplanted and grown elsewhere in the world, but I am not interested so much in opinions about them unless they are exceptional tasting.
These "DOP" San Marzano canned tomatoes can be purchased online, but they cost about 4 to 5 times the price of normal supermarket brands. I've had a hard time convincing myself this extravagant extra cost would be worth it. If there's anyone who's ventured the price and think the investment was or was not worth it, I'd appreciate hearing your comments.
They sell those tomatoes here at the market. I used them once and they did taste better and not as sweet as hunts or del monte, but they were okay. I think the 28oz can was like 4 dollars.
If I made a lasagna or pasta dish with them versus store brand you may not even notice the difference after the seasonings have been added.
See if you have a trader joes or whole foods near you. They usually carry them.
