Can I feed my guinea pigs seed sprouts (lentil, mustard, etc?)?
Hi. I have two guinea pigs that I feed Timothy Hay, commercial pellets, and a wide variety of vegetables. I am currently making sprouts (lentil) for myself, and was wondering if I can add a bit to their diet. I know alfalfa sprouts are no good, but how about other sprouts, like lentil, mustard or pea (in moderation of course)? I would feed them to the pigs when the seeds are fully sprouted (so, they wouldn't be eating the seeds or beans, just the sprouts). Thanks for all of your help.
they like lentils, in bean form or sprout form. Be aware that some can be poisonous... you need to do some research. You cant just throw some in the cage. Just be sure the bean or seed doesnt have a hard splintery shell. They like so many varieties of veggies and lentils, but keep in mind that every pig has diffrent tastes. Some may like and some wont. They can be a bit picky. Also lentils can rot quickly dont leave it in there cage for a long time. Give them a dish its better to clean out. Have you tried fruits? They love diffrent fruits too. Stay away from too many tubers like potatoes or yams, be sure never to feed green peelings... you can chunk up a potatoe but peel it first. just incase you dont see if its green underneath or not. Mine liked the lima beans and I soaked mine in water and then gave them to the piggies and they liked them but BEANS can cause gas and its hard for guinea pigs to fart and burp so do it very very sparingly. Ive raised Guinea pigs for over 17 years. here are some yes and no's to vegtables and fruits though this sight is very picky and I have found diffrent views over the years of having pets... They are basically saying these things for novice pig owners. Usually its better safe then sorry if you are not experianced with owning or raising them.
