LEEKS. When to pick?

1) I've grown 3 leeks for the first time. They look good and leeky. Someone said you should wait for frost before lifting them so I was waiting until November/December. However, 2 of them seem to be growing a bud thingy - like an unopened flower - and I'm wondering if they are going to seed. Help. Should I lift them now.
2) I've also got 3 little aubergines under plastic. Will they get bigger (South of England) or again, should I pick them now?

Harvest leeks when they are large enough for your tastes. Do not let the bulbs get overly large. A good rule of thumb is to harvest when they are 1.7 - 2.5 cm (3/4 - 1") in diameter. They usually are harvested before they send up their seed stalk. I personally like their flavor when on the smaller side. Some frost tolerant leeks actually taste better after a couple of frosts.
