Tips on How to Grow Leaf Lettuce
There are many varieties of lettuce that you can choose from. Learning how to grow leaf lettuce is one of the most easy. Though, if you are to expect bountiful harvest, there are a couple of things that you need to prepare in order to meet the needs of a leaf lettuce.
Lettuce are generally categorized into six cultivars or varieties namely: Batavian, Chinese, Looseleaf, Butterhead, Iceberg and Cos lettuce. Leaf lettuce includes several varieties like Oak leaf, Grand Rapids, Ruby and Red Sails lettuce.
Like the Romaine or Cos variety, one of the advantage of growing Leaf lettuce is that it is more tolerant of heat compared to other types of lettuce. Thus, you can still grow this type of lettuce even during summer provided that the garden is amply shaded by tall trees and properly irrigated.
To ensure that you get the most out of your Leaf lettuce garden, here are a couple of things you need to remember throughout the process of growing Leaf lettuce:
PREPARATION
First of all, you would have to choose which variety of Leaf lettuce you are planning to grow. There are generally 2 varieties for you to choose from: Green leaf lettuce and the Red leaf lettuce. Both are widely adapted type so growing both can be pretty much an option for you as well.
Also, you need to have your plot prepared. Preparation includes making raised beds and making sure the area is completely weeded. Furthermore, you also need to apply compost or organic fertilizer on the soil a few weeks before planting the seeds. You need to make sure that the soil is of loamy type.
SOWING
When sowing the lettuce seeds, you need to make sure that you plant the seeds about 1/4 of an inch deep and 12 - 18 inches apart. Although, you can plant the seeds much closer if you plan to harvest some of the lettuce at a much earlier time as baby lettuce. After sowing, rake gently the soil over the lettuce seeds. After which, you can water the newly planted seeds lightly.
CARE
The roots of the lettuce are pretty shallow which is why extra care is much needed. You have to see to it that the plot is constantly weeded. As for irrigation, constant watering will be very good for the plant but it has to be done lightly as this will result to a much better and high quality produce. Over-watering, on the other hand, could lead to scalding and soft growth.
Applying organic mulches is very good in moderating soil temperature. This is used by lettuce growers to produce high quality lettuce even in less than ideal weather conditions.
Also, be on the lookout for the common problems in growing lettuce namely: aphids, tipburn and foliage rots. Being aware of these problems at its early stage will help you implement successfully some counter measures against these problems.
You can usually harvest lettuce 50-60 days after. Or in the case of leaf lettuce, you can cut the leaves as long as it is large enough for use.
