How do I tell which tomato plant seedlings are the best and which ones to pull out?
So I took a cup with about a 4 in. diameter and just took a bunch of different tomato seeds including Jubilee (hybrid), Leader Garden Monster (open pollinated), Early Girl (hybrid), Rutger (hybrid), and a Large Fruited Red-Cherry (hybrid). So I took all of these seeds and tossed them into a cup and put enough rain water into the soil the keep it moist for about a week. My seeds have just germinated today and I want to keep only 27 of them (I think there are about 40 seeds in there).
#1. how do I know which seedling will be the strongest and best for produce?
#2. It is currently March 12th, how can I keep 27 of these plants in my house until April?
P.S. I also have a growth light I have been using.
Hello! I am growing Better Boys, Rutgers, and a Cherry, and I just started a 72 cell starter of Red Currant Cherries, Pink Icicle, and Chocolate stripe tomatoes today, so maybe I can be of some assistance!
The seedlings that I usually choose are the ones that are STRAIGHT! Because if they are curving already at only a week old, there may be some major problems. BUT, straight doesn't mean the tallest seedling. Just because some seedlings are taller than the rest doesn't mean they are the best. Try and see the ones that have the thickest stems, and the most foliage (leaves).
A grow light will definitely be needed if you want to keep your plants indoors unitl the freezing is done with. The way I would do it, would be to get little dixie cups, or foam cups, or a cell starter like mine, and put ONE seedling per cup/cell. If you use dixie or foam cups, make a few drainage holes in the bottom of each cup and put a bunch of the cups in one of those tin lasagna/cake pans to catch all of the drainage.
Now if you notice the seedlings getting so spindly and tall to where they start to fall over, just bury the stem higher in soil. It wont hurt the plant, and will make it have a stronger root system.
I hope I helped, and good luck with your tomatoes!(:
