| cooking advice |
I collected acorns from a 400 year old William Penn oak tree.?
I'm sprouting them, they're already starting the tap root.
What I'm wondering is whether the these are white oak or some other variety?
Should I keep them potted through the winter and plant them in the spring?
Anything special or of interest in planting an heirloom tree like this, I'm sure it's done all the time?
The trunk of the parent tree is something like 16ft in diameter, pretty impressive, shame I don't have a few hundred years to watch these grow.
If you have a William Penn oak, it is a white oak according to all I've read. I have black oaks that I've overwintered--in gallon containers and they did fine. If you mulch them with rotting oak leaves, it'll be like giving them vitamins. We have some gigantic valley oaks that are huge--but oaks are finnicky about pruning and having their roots cut--but then, you have a while before that happens. Just be careful about root rot and fungal growth at the base of your little oak seedlings in the beginning by not overwatering, and let them stay outdoors but in a sheltered area. All my black oaks made it-even though it snowed and we had a cold winter. Good luck. William Penn would be glad to know his trees live on!
