I've planted two heirloom types. If I save the seeds, will they be hybrids from cross-pollination?
I've planted green zebra and Cherokee purple tomatoes. I hadn't planned on saving the seeds, because I never tried that before. Now I'm just curious--They're within 10 feet of each other, will they have hybridized?
Do you have to plant only one type of heirloom to get heirloom seeds?
Thanks. I'm mainly considering saving the seeds because a friend wants some green zebras.
So, I might be giving her purple zebras or Cherokee green, huh?
IF they require cross-pollination, probably.
IF they are self-pollinated, maybe.
IF you want a pure strain, it should be the ONLY type planted in a given area and/or season or otherwise isolated to prevent unwanted pollination.
SOME "hybrid" plants are ONLY produced by specific cross-pollinations, and the resulting plants grown from THOSE seeds are sterile and will NOT "freely" reproduce at all, or produce something entirely different from the parent plant, usually similar to one of those used in producing the hybrid.
Others will produce "true" plants, just like the parent plant from which you obtained the seed.
