If you buy a seeded Watermelon, will the seeds grow if you plant them?
I bought a huge watermelon w/ lots of seeds, and i was wondering if you plant them they will grow? or do they make the seeds have a special chemical in them so you'll buy more of THEIR watermelons.
the right answers are here already. Yes, you may get a melon, assuming you get more than one flower from your plant, and/or there are other melon plants growing near you that yours can cross pollinate with. But because melons, and most other fruits we buy in the grocery store today are hybrids, not heirloom fruits, they do not generally grow "true to seed" fruits. Heirloom- open pollinated, true to seed- fruits and veggies do. You will find these at farmer's markets and organic farms.
In spite of this, I do encourage you to save your seeds and try growing them anyway if you don't mind a bit of mystery in discovering the exact variety you will get. I did this before I started my landscaping biz, and my kids loved it! We were rewarded with about 30 gourds in 6 different types, and a great halloween display- which cost me $0. All from 5 pumpkins bought the year before!
