getting a green horse to cross water?
Where we live there is not a lot of chance to cross water you basicly have to go find it. So that is what we are doing on our next trail ride. The only problem is we have green horses and riders with not a lot of water experience. So what is the best way to have a good ride and cross water with a green horse. Thanks for the help......
I usually take a crop and just keep tapping the horse gently on the rump and keep their head facing the water. I got my mare into water this way.
Both times a horse got completely over water fear had to do with jumping in. With my mare, there was a line of horses jumping over a small log into the water. She followed the horses over the log and was surprised to find herself in the middle of a pond. It was about 9am and already 90 degrees out, so she decided water isn't so bad.
A pony I used to ride would jump over all the creeks on the trails. We went to this river once and he jumped.....went soaring through the air......and landed with a splash in the middle of the river. He splashed around a bit, surprised and a bit freaked out at being suddenly knee deep in water - but he didn't have water problems after that.
So...if you can find a log - that would work. If you can get a horse that doesn't have water problems to lead over, that will help. Otherwise, keep their head facing the water and just tap tap tap. (along with keeping your leg on).
