How many colors of Bantam Cochin chickens are there?
I was wanting to get a hen of every color bantam cochin, and was wondering how many colors are there? So far I have came up with this:
-Blue Red
-White
-Splash
-Blue
-Black
-Mottled
-Gold Partridge
-Silver Laced
-Lemon Cuckoo
-Mottled Buff
-Salmon
-Golden Laced
-Lavender
-Blue Mottled
-Brassy Back
-Red
-Brown Red
-Birchen
-Partridge
-Wheaten
-Millie Fleur
-Silver Penciled
-Columbian
-Cuckoo (same as Barred Rock?)
-Crele
And of course the two odd types of feathers:
-Silkie
-Frizzle
Are there any other colors or feather types I have missed, if so what colors? Thanks!
Cochin Colors are unlimited, especially when dealing with bantams. So basically if it is a color, then you can have it, or eventually breed towards it.
Colors I see you missed are
Buff Barred, Blue Partridge, Buff or Light Columbian, Porcelain, Blue Wheaten, Mottled Lavender, Blue Penciled, Silver Cuckoo, and Gold Cuckoo.
As for Cuckoo vs. Barred vs. Crele (This is what I have read, simplified, and concluded, but I could be wrong.)
Barring, Cuckoo and Crele are from the same mutation, and sex-linkable.
Barring contains Columbian (Co) as well as the sex-linked late-feathering (K). These two genes help give the Barring its bright and well put together coloring.
Cuckoo is early feathering and doesn’t have the Columbian gene. This makes the pattern more blurred.
Both Barred and Cuckoo are on extended black. (Lets skip the Buff Barred and so forth)
Crele is barring on the traditional black-breasted red pattern. These birds tend to be early feathering, and Columbian can’t be added without damaging the black-breasted red coloring.
As for Buff Barring and so forth that would be a cross most likely resulting from a normal Barred Cochin X (the desired color to take place of the black.)
Best wishes,
