Revitalize Your Fields With Cover Crops

Cover crops are planted to manage soil quality, soil fertility, water, pests, diseases, weeds, biodiversity and wildlife in ecological system that is managed by humans to get better returns. The trend of cover crop farming is increasing fast as the results are much encouraging. Covering crops have been proved very effective in improving the qualities of neighboring ecosystems. Farmers may choose to grow specific cover crops according to specific needs in accordance to biological, environmental, cultural, economic and social parameters.

Covering crop is used in production cycles to serve different purposes:

  • It is planted during primary stage of growing season. It is used as rotational crop.
  • It is used as a companion crop and planted in-between the two rows of cash crop.
  • It is used as 'catch' crop for the nutrients. It is planted after the harvest of cash crop.
  • It is used as off-season crop generally during the winter season to protect the soil.

To get the true benefits, cover crop farming must be done carefully with scientific approach. For cover cropping we have numerous options. Selection depends upon the particular requirements, nature of soil, crop planning and weather.

Nutrients available in six covering crops can be calculated with the help of following table:

Nutrients available from cover crop

  • Harvest the cover crop from 1 ft2 of field above the ground, dry and weigh it in the conventional oven at 112 deg F for 2 - 5 days.
  • To calculate biomas of dry crop per acre, multiply the weight of dry crop by 43,560
  • To calculate N of the crop /acre use following formulas:
    Rye: (biomass - 17.4) X N = .0174
    Hairy vetch: (biomass - 3.1)x N = .0368 X
    Crimson clover: (biomass + 13.8) X N = .0183 X
    Caley peas: (biomass - 6.1)X N = .0383
    Subterranean clover: (biomass + 2.9) X N = .0252

The ultimate gains of cover crop farming solely depend upon different parameters so one crop proved good for a field can't ne be equally good for another filed. Many farming institutes, research centers and Govt supported agencies offer free consultancy to help the farmers. To take the benefits, farmers just need to take initiatives at personal level. So far results of cover crop farming have proved that farmers can turn the fortunes in their favor despite odd weather conditions.

Ever see a cow cook clover? No? Put it in a salad with the flowers, add a raspberry vinaigrette and enjoy. Clover is a good and healthy addition to salad. Look for wild garlic and chives too. Good for you to enjoy wild foods. LOL
