Just Enough Asian Decor
Wanting to fix up your space a little using an Asian persuasion, but don't want to overrun your home with Asian decor, strong colors, and exotic hodgepodge?
It's surely not unimaginable, I promise.
The reason why?How on earth could I make that promise?
Quickly mull over the Japanese style of interior decorating. Before I got "into" interior decorating, I had a British friend visit who observed that my house was "practically Japanese". Confused, I asked her what she meant. She didn't mean any Asian figurines I had (or didn't have), but the fact that my house was so.....barren. But, hey, I had just moved in!
But tada!....the key to a simple Asian home decor. The Japanese keep it simple, so you can just take a hintclue from them.
So the very first thing you need to do to get on your way is go get a big box and vacate all of your clutter. Take out what you can, homing in on items that in no way, shape, or form, would fit into an oriental motif.
Of the things you simply must leave behind, ensure that everything has its own "space". Forgoing itmes that are meant to be a part of a set, each item should have a designated area distant from other items to keep the area seeming uncrowded.
After that's done, you should find some Asian items to decorate with. Here's some of my recommendations:
* Houseplants - If you don't have a green thumb, or don't have the best situation for houseplants ("Oh, honey, you'll LOVE this apartment with no windows!"), you can always get a silk plant. Of course, half the time when anyone thinks of "houseplant" and "asian" is to go "bonsai!", but you aren't obligated to go that route. Why not try an Asian money tree or if you like fresh flowers, an oriental lily? Remember to count the plant as a decoration and thus give it its own "space" as mentioned above.
* Water fountains - Water fountains are a very time-honored feng shui decoration. They aren't just pleasing to the eye, their tranquil flow calms the most savage beast. A few drops of bleach in the water will kill the bacteria and algae that can turn a water green and stinky.
* Japanese Tea Sets/Sake Sets - Absolutely perfect for adorning a kitchen or dining area, even if you never use them. (Dust them off to fool guests!) They can be found in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and patterns, anything from nice earthy tones to a bold blacks and reds.
* Chinese Gongs - You don't need a monstrous one sitting in your room... These gongs are avaliable in small sizes too, perfect for a desk, end table, or even at that perfect mantle centerpiece.
* Figurines - Buddha figurines are very popular , but if you're vying for something more secular, Asian figurines come in all shapes and sizes.
Remember to keep it simple; you only really need four or five items to bring an Asian feel to any area, and the simpler you keep the room, the more each of those items will stand out.
These tips can bring exotic luxury to any space.
